Course overview
Course description
Immerse yourself in the enchanting world of classic children's fantasy novels with our day school dedicated to this beloved literary tradition. This course offers a dive into the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, Ursula K. LeGuin, and J.M. Barrie, focusing on their celebrated titles: The Hobbit, A Wizard of Earthsea, and Peter Pan.
You are not required to read the entire novels beforehand; instead, we will concentrate on selected chapters to facilitate in-depth discussions. Our exploration will cover the literary significance of these authors, examining the themes and ideas they present in their stories. Additionally, we will consider the enduring legacy of these classic titles and their impact on the genre and readers alike.
All essential resources and readings will be provided before the day school, allowing you to prepare and reflect both before and after the session. The course structure includes a mix of tutor-led presentations and engaging group discussions, providing a comprehensive understanding of the material.
Throughout the day, we will alternate between detailed analyses of the texts and the broader cultural contexts in which they were written. This approach will help us understand how these fantastical narratives relate to the real world, offering insights into the timeless appeal of children’s fantasy literature.
Join us for a captivating journey through some of the most iconic works in children's fantasy literature, and deepen your appreciation for the stories that have shaped the imaginations of generations.
