Entry Levels 1,2,3: If you have never studied this subject before and you’re not confident in your skills, Entry levels are a good starting point.
Level 1: Covers basic skills and knowledge needed for this subject
Level 2: Building on basic knowledge or experience. Similar to Grade 4/ C at GCSE or O level in England or Standards in Scotland.
Level 3: Learn about the topic in-depth and have a broad range of skills. Independent working Equivalent to an A level in England or Higher in Scotland.
Beginners: A perfect introduction if you have no experience and skills in this subject.
Improvers: The next step if you have basic skills or knowledge but want to progress them further.
Advanced: Build on the solid experience and skills you have in this subject, applying your skills and knowledge in a more complex way.

What we’ll cover
Understand how to adapt your language to your listeners, and change register when necessary
Be able to use a range of verb forms and expressions to explain an anecdote or describe something
Sharpen your conversation skills by listening to others in a discussion and reacting to what they say
Improve your listening skills by picking out important information from conversations or audios
Practise polite ways to clarify or confirm understanding.
This is a preparation course for the ESOL level 1 speaking and listening qualification. It is not an accredited course.
You need previous knowledge and skills to take this course, that’s why you’ll need to do a skills check to enrol. Don’t worry, this isn’t an exam. It’s for us to make sure you get on the right course for your level.

When you complete this introductory course, you will be ready to take the ESOL skills for life level 1 speaking and listening course.
There are “get ready” courses between each module to prepare you for the next course.
What to expect
This get ready for ESOL course takes around 40 hours to complete. It gives you more opportunities to learn the verbal communication skills required for a level 1 speaking and listening qualification.
Please note that you’ll need an internet connection to study ESOL courses online and in person. This is so you can access our digital learning platform, Canvas.
