Course overview

This is a General English Class aimed at elementary (A1 / ESOL Entry 1) level learners. This course is for those whose first language is NOT English and in it we will practice all four major skills in each session to develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Although this is a low-level English course, learners should be able to recognise sounds of the English letters and read simple lines of text prior to joining so that they won’t struggle. Lessons will be delivered face-to-face using a range of teacher led and freer interactive activities to build learners’ proficiency and confidence in the English language.

Course description

In this five-week ESOL course, (English for Speakers of Other Languages) learners will practice their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through the topics of: Holidays; Predictions; Quizzes; Extreme places in the world. Areas of grammar will be: ‘going to’ for plans; going to for predictions; comparative adjectives & superlative adjectives. Vocabulary will centre around holidays, verb phrases, personality adjectives and the weather. Role plays will be based around ordering a meal at a restaurant and students will learn useful phrases for this situation. Students will engage in pair work, games, written and verbal exercises. There will also be a written assignment in which learners will write instructions for their favourite sandwich using a given example as scaffolding. There will be a summative assessment at the end to help learners gauge their own progress and develop a degree of autonomy in their learning. It is hoped that learners will progress to the next course in the series upon successful completion.
